On January 25th at Tansploshadka in St Petersburg, Mali Larrington-Nelson, aka Shy One, had her first gig in Russia. Having started playing at the age of 13, primarily on underground radio stations, she was very quickly noticed by the London-based producer Scratcha DVA from Hyperdub label. As with many young Londoners at the time, grime and the wider family of indigenous London club music was what gave Shy One the passion to pursue music as more than a pastime.
The diversity of her taste brought her to the scene. As well as DJing and releasing music more recently through labels like Diskotopia and Through My Speakers, Shy One is also a resident DJ and part of London’s BBZ and Touching Bass collectives - two forward-thinking groups of artists. Wherever she plays, it is always a swirl of eclectics, any genre from breakbeat to jazz, footwork to disco can find a place in her live sets.
The event is part of the UK-Russia Year of Music programme.
