To hear how the opera company connects with communities, and why, join Opera North’s Education Director, Jacqui Cameron, on Sunday, February 16th, at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich - Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre. She will share the successes and challenges of various strands of their activity, including their work with young people through schools in a socio-economically deprived area of Leeds and the process of supporting a community in the north of England to write and perform their own opera to tell the story that they want to tell.
13:00 – 14:30 Presentation by Jacqui Cameron, Education Director of Opera North, where education has been an essential part of the theatre’s work for many years.
14:45 – 16:00 Workshop with composer James Garner, who will talk about making music with audiences without an academic music background.
Please register to attend. The event will be in English with translation.
The mission statement of Opera North’s Education department reads:
Creating Extraordinary Experiences Every Day; connecting with communities and inspiring each generation through opera. Opera North believe that opera companies can support people of all ages to develop their creativity further and that participating in Arts activity – whether music, drama or dance – can enhance the health and well-being of people in the communities where they work. Evaluation suggests arts participation can reduce loneliness and isolation among our oldest residents; it can support community cohesion and the development of a ‘sense of place’. Embedding regular music making activity within a school curriculum has been shown to support pupils to benefit from a range of personal and social outcomes: to raise aspirations, increase expectations and develop communication and teamworking skills, confidence, self-worth, creativity, problem solving, adaptability and resilience.
