George Benjamin is composer, conductor and teacher. He was a student of Olivier Messiaen and became famous while still a student: his orchestral piece Ringed by the Flat Horizon was performed at the BBC Proms in 1980, making him the youngest living composer to have his music performed at the Proms. He turned to opera only in 2006 with Into the Little Hill which was followed in 2012 opera Written on Skin, commissioned by the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Katie Mitchell's production has seen great success on dozens of stages around the world, including the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow in 2017, and also in 2017 a concert performance of Written on Skin was given at the Mariinsky Concert Hall.
